The approximately 54-meter-high Kröpeliner Tor was once part of Rostock's city fortifications and was the westernmost of the four large city gates.
This tower was built in the Gothic brick style in the last third of the 13th century. It is unclear whether it was named after a patrician family or after the small town of Kröpelin.
The tower once housed a museum, but today it is the headquarters of the Geschichtswerkstatt Rostock e. V. association.

The Kröpeliner Tor was built as the westernmost of the four large gates of the Rostock city fortifications around 1270 in the Gothic style. Even then, it was very large with its two floors and remained one of the mightiest of the up to 22 city gates at times.
