The lake was created as a meltwater lake from the last ice age. Since 1830 there have been extensive efforts to drain it and to use the area for agriculture. In 1967 it was completely drained. After a defect in the pumping station in 1993, the water level rose again quickly. Today the lake has been renatured and again the habitat and breeding area of many native bird species. From two observation towers you can observe up to 80 water bird species over the year, 25 species breed on the lake.

Legend has it that a monastery stood in the middle of the lake. Through the prats and gluttony of the nuns, it was downright to the "downfall" of the monastery, if you believe the legend. 😉 There is a driveway directly at the main road with parking facilities. From there you can start your walk well.
