The Cathedral of Santa Croce is the seat of the bishop of Forlì-Bertinoro, inside it is preserved the sacred image of the Madonna del Fuoco, patron saint of the diocese.

It was the young Forlì architect Giulio Zambianchi, with an intervention in 1841, who gave the Cathedral the charm of solidity, classical grandeur and wonder that can be admired today in Piazza Del Duomo in Forlì.

The origins of Santa Croce are not known. However, there is talk of a plebs liviensis, which scholars recognize as the cathedral, as early as the 10th century. And the chronicler Sigismondo Marchesi in 1678 described it as existing well before 1200, but the first installation was dared as early as the fifth century.

The Cathedral stands on what was the main square of the city, the place where the market took place and where justice was conducted. In all likelihood that public space corresponded precisely to the churchyard of the religious building. Then, in 1212, following an emphyteusis contract stipulated between the "Town Hall" and San Mercuriale, the market headquarters was officially placed on the nearby Campo dell'Abate, the new large public area that would become Piazza Aurelio Saffi.
