    DEMOSTHENES STELLAS

    Simplify again

“Simplify, simplify again, always simplify and when you have simplified everything, you will not have simplified enough”! This sentence integrated into the fresco by Démosthène Stellas constitutes the leitmotif of Alphonse Balat, the architect of this splendid Meuse villa. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Namur, then Antwerp, Balat is one of the main architects of King Leopold II and the mentor of the architect Victor Horta. We owe him the Laeken Greenhouses but also the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels.

This principle of simplification dear to Balat, Démosthène of the Drash collective applied it to this monumental painting inspired by Art Nouveau, starting from something realistic to arrive at simplified, even suggested, motifs. The work also finds its source in the work of photographer Blossfledt, precursor of macro photography and author of “Essentielles”, who inspired numerous ornamental motifs. Its palette of shades of green evokes nature but also the hues that the Meuse takes depending on its mood and the seasons.

The Villa Balat fresco, which will extend towards rue Mazy, adjoins the Enjambée, an innovative work of art which also respects this principle of simplicity. In this context, the work of Demosthenes makes the link between the past and the present, the banks of Jambes and the Confluence. It invites walkers to return to simple, essential things, in an environment conducive to contemplation and relaxation.

The bridge can be accessed from two levels. The upper street level or via wonderfully integrated stairs from the waterfront.

This principle of simplification dear to Balat,

Démosthène from the Drash collective applied it to

this monumental painting inspired by Art

New, starting from something realistic to arrive at simplified patterns, even

suggested. The work also finds its source

in the work of photographer Blossfledt, pioneer of macro photography and author

        of “Essentials”, which inspired many

ornamental patterns. Its palette composed of

shades of green evoke nature but

also the colors that the Meuse takes according to

        its mood and the seasons.

The creation of the fresco coincides with the construction of the Enjambée footbridge, a work

of innovative art which also respects this principle

of simplicity. In this context, the work of

Drash links the past and the present,

the banks of Jambes and the Confluence. She invites

walkers to return to simple things,

essential, in an environment conducive to

        contemplation and relaxation.

Production: Drash / City of Namur (summer 2019).

        Illustration: sketch.
