  • Tweeddale Court is one of 80 closes that fall off the Royal Mile. As one of the busiest roads in Edinburgh, it can get overwhelming to walk down at times. So, escaping into the quiet closes is a lovely respite. ‘Close’ is a Scottish word for alleyways, but they can also be called wynd, court, and entry. They were often named after a notable person or family that lived in the close. Or, after the traders that settled in that area.
And, nice to know: Tweeddale Court featured in season 3 of the the serie Outlander.

  • Tweeddale Court is one the best examples of closes and wynds in Edinburgh. His entrance is located opposite the Scottish Storytelling Centre, nearby the World’s End pub. Tweeddale Court is an interesting location with rich history. Walking down the narrow passageway you emerge through a pair of iron gates into a courtyard. At the back of this decorative close was the Tweeddale mansion, right in front of you. As well as Tweeddale House, the courtyard at the end of the close has another quirky features worth a look. The high stone wall on the west side of the close is thought to be a remnant of the ‘Kings Wall’, which in medieval times marked the boundary of the city. Another point of interest is the the lamp post near the entrance. This was one of the first gas-powered fixtures to be introduced in the whole of Scotland. Tweeddale Court is used as one of the streets in 18th century Edinburgh in ''Outlander''. So if you're walking the Royal Mile, step off the beaten track and explore the closes and courts.
