Handy and lovely cycle path along an old railway line and in the shadow of Arthur’s Seat. So called because the operators of the railway used horse drawn wagons well after all the other railways started using steam engines.

Worth putting on your lights going through the tunnel. Last time I cycled through, there was a toddler wandering over the path, not easy to see at a dark spot between the roof lights. Watch your speed going downhill, lots of pedestrians around.

Be aware that later in the early evening that this group of yobs are using the path as a rat run dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/edinburgh-bike-gang-terrorise-intimidate-26871546
reddit users have reported them as very active in the niddry area as well as the assault on a cyclist in the Seafield Leith cycle path .

This tunnel to and from Edinburgh is a wonderful way to cycle in and out of the city without interruptions. No pretty views, but fun and effective.

Very atmospheric, well worth a visit.

If you keep an eye out as you go along, you’ll see signs of its own purpose: the remains of a bridge built to connect farmland on either side; the remains of old short platforms; remains of what might have been more extensive buildings now gone; and if you delve into the woodland a hundred metres also down from the tunnel there are still a few remains of the railway.

Amazing street art on a well maintained tunnel taking you past Arthur's Seat and into the city.

Use your lights and watch out for dogs on long leashes

The Innocent Railway path runs from the Newington/St Leonard's area under Holyrood Park via Duddingston and Craigmillar to Brunstane in the East of the city. It is one of Edinburgh's extensive off-road pedestrian cycleways and part of the UK-wide, National Cycle Network's Route 1 (NCN1).

The Innocent Railway Path is a real gem for cyclists in Edinburgh, combining history and modern use of urban spaces in a unique way. As I begin my journey along this historic path, I immediately feel transported to another time. The fact that this path was once a railway line with horse-drawn carriages instead of steam locomotives adds a nostalgic touch to my journey.
After exiting the tunnel the path opens up to a more peaceful route that passes through some of the lesser known parts of Edinburgh. The ride is both fun and effective; it offers a quick connection in and out of the city without having to worry about traffic or disruptions.
