The church is remarkably far from Nordby itself. The reason for this is probably that at the time the first church was built—probably a wooden church—there were two other villages in the area, namely Glistrup and Søby, in addition to Nordby and Mårup.
The church's foundation stone was laid in the first half of the 13th century, and it has been rebuilt and expanded several times since then.
The Romanesque baptismal font, made of coarse-grained granite, is the church's oldest feature. It was probably already in the first church from the 13th century. Just below the rim is an unusual decoration: a snake biting its tail.
