Tips

  • Just ahead of Bovbjerg Lighthouse is a whole ship graveyard of stranded ships.
The two steamboats "Lutka" and "Stanley" are almost on top of each other - the closest to land. A little further out is the "Knarresbro", the big steamer in the picture.
The "Lutka" ran aground on December 25, 1886. Its 18-man crew was rescued by rescuers from Ferring Station with the rocket apparatus. The ship was traveling with hard coal from Burntisland to Gdansk.
The "Stanley" ran aground on December 22, 1895, loaded with wheat while en route from the Black Sea to Bergen. All but one of the 23-strong crew died in the rough surf as their lifeboat drifted far north and capsized.
The 2,019 GRT "Knarresbro" was loaded with corn and en route from Baltimore to Svendborg. She ran aground on March 5, 1906. The 26-man crew was rescued by lifeboats from Tuskjær and Liløre rescue stations.
A few days after the rescue of the crew, the ship was completely smashed by another storm.
All three wrecks can be viewed by divers, but the wreckage parts lie far and wide and only the steam boilers and engine parts protrude from the seabed.
