Statue commemorating Victor Emmanuel II (Vittorio Emanuele Maria Alberto Eugenio Ferdinando Tommaso di Savoia) - King of Sardinia 1849-1861 - was the first king of independent unified Italy until 1878. It was he who, together with the popular hero Garibaldi, united Italy (among other things through various wars) and, shortly before his death, caused Rome to become the capital of Italy

This statue of Vittorio Emanuel II is located on the city wall of Lucca at the Baluardo Santa Maria (entrance gate).

Victor Emanuel II (Vittorio Emanuele Maria Alberto Eugenio Ferdinando Tommaso; Turin, 14 March 1820 - Rome, 9 January 1878) was King of Sardinia from 1849, and on 17 March 1861 he obtained the title King of Italy, the first king of a unified Italy, a title he held until his death in 1878. The Italians gave him the nickname Father of the Fatherland (Italian: 'Padre della Patria').

He strove for a unified Italy, but Austria - which played a leading role in northern Italy - opposed this. Nevertheless, he succeeded with the help of the French.
