The last of three post mills on the island was in operation until 1949.
The residents of the city were stunned and shocked in December 1973 when the Mühlenberg was robbed of its traditional landmark following a fire. Reconstruction was impossible due to the severe damage. In 1985, committed Werder residents and the city administration managed to track down a similar mill in Klossa near Jessen, which was quite well-preserved except for the wings, and bought it for 6,000 GDR marks. The inauguration of the new old mill was celebrated in 1991 and in August 1993 its wings turned again for the first time at the 1st Mill Festival. The old millstones that lie in the grass on one side of the Mühlenberg are still a reminder of the burnt down mill.
