Once a medieval church dedicated to Saint Margaret, it retains its 14th-century façade. It became a cathedral in 1853 and was dedicated to Saint Joseph in 1808.

Its earliest records date back to the mid-1300s, when it was dedicated to San Nicola degli Schiavoni, and it belonged to the homonymous brotherhood established by the large local Croatian colony, which until the 16th century could count on more than 50 families. Shortly before the mid-1600s the ancient building was demolished and replaced with the current church. Its latest construction is based on the design by Luigi Vanvitelli, with a Greek cross plan. The facade has a monumental appearance, with an important portal in late Renaissance style, on which opens a window with a balustrade
