The church of St. John the Baptist is probably standing on Roman foundations - not far from the building traces of extensive Roman buildings have been found, including the remains of a theater with over 3000 seats, as well as remnants of a cult building and a palace.

Franconian tombs from the 7th century AD, which were found in the vicinity of the church, indicate that the place has been used as a cemetery at least since the time of migration. The Romanesque church tower dates from the end of the 12th century, the ship in its original form is about 100 years younger.

Until the 15th century, the church served as a parish church of an area that was extended to Trassem and Freudenburg, from 1442 it was a branch church. It marks the place of a settlement abandoned in the Middle Ages. The village was then affected by the plague and the surviving inhabitants later settled several hundred meters from the deforestation, so that the church of St. John the Baptist is no longer in town, but about 800 meters from the center. The building was still used as a chapel; the cemetery remained in use.

1509 went the church together with Freudenburg in the possession of a Trier Benedictine monastery over.

1629 the hitherto single-nave building was extended by the master builder Niklas or Nicholas from Perl and rebuilt into a two-nave church with late Gothic vault. The building has an impressive acoustics. The sound arcade carries a grotesque figure, the fighters are decorated with grimaces. Above the altar is today a modern Christ figure; in the left side wall is a plaque for the dead admitted, which are not or in unknown place buried.

At the end of the military cemetery is a lowered viewpoint with information board, Rastbank and a simple railing. From here you have a wide view of the Saar valley and the ideal position for the typical Klausen photo, as you can see it everywhere. So a must for photo fans!

Currently (7/2019) the war cemetery is closed because of oak procession infestation!

A detour to Kastel Staadt is worth twice, once the magnificent view from the military cemetery to the Saar Valley and the second also the Kasteler Felsenpfad to walk,
