In spring and autumn the skies can almost darken when large flocks of migratory birds pass by to rest on the salt meadows and in the lakes behind the coast. In the breeding season, the lakes are populated by breeding waterfowl and ducks because there is plenty of food here.
The lagoon lakes were formed when a protective dam was built on the east side of the headland in 1954.The Harbore Headland is protected for these natural resources and has been designated an EU Bird Sanctuary. Denmark, through its participation in the "Rasmar Agreement" (international agreement on wetlands as habitat for waterfowl and wading birds), has committed to manage the area in this way; that the natural conditions are not impaired.
