The Burgstall Hainburg lies on a spur-like elevation above the surrounding valleys. To the south is the valley of the Rüsselbach, to the west that of the Schwabach and to the north that of the Kalkach. A largely level ridge adjoins to the east. Due to the steep slopes in the south, west and north, the castle complex was almost unassailable there. In the north and east, the castle is protected by a powerful moat system.

Extensive traces in the area still bear witness to the large facility measuring 140 x 90 m. It consisted of a bailey (1), a main bailey (2), a southern (3) and a northern (4) extension of the bailey and a northern, lower area of the main bailey (5).
