As early as 676, the Merovingian king Dagobert II is said to have founded a monastery here under the name "Sigismundzell", which was settled by Benedictine monks. It is therefore one of the oldest monastic foundations in Alsace. After the destruction by the Hungarians in the 10th century. and the reconstruction in the 11th century Pope Leo IX. the church of st. Mark. After the turmoil of the peasant wars and the Frz. Revolution, the monastery was finally sold as state property. In 1845, the priest Abbè Pierre Paul Blanck founded the congregation of the "Sisters of Saint Joseph of Saint-Marc" in Gueberschwihr, whose mother monastery it is to this day.
