The history of the village of Neukirchen is extremely unusual, after all, a town almost came into being here around 400 years ago.

Duke Johann the Younger von Glücksburg acquired the "wilderness on the beach" with the Nübel estate in 1618 and wanted to set up a trading post at the entrance to the Flensburg Fjord in order to create a connection to his properties on the other side of the fjord and compete with Flensburg at sea.

In the street village designed on the drawing board, the current village street of Neukirchen, 32 houses were built in "Nieby", the "New Village". The construction of the port began, and at the same time he erected the "New Church" "about 800 paces west of the village" directly on the cliffs. However, the duke died at the age of 77 shortly before his new church was completed, and the sons who were entitled to inherit it fell out. Although the church was completed, the port was not further built - probably because the Flensburg merchants had protested to the Danish king against the unloved competition on the outer fjord. With that, the “city founding” project died, and due to a lack of employment opportunities, 12 houses were demolished and “flushed” (relocated) along with their residents near Glücksburg. The name "New Church" (later Neukirchen) passed to the parish formed with the consecration of the church in 1622. This lasted at least 370 years, because it was only on January 1, 1992 that Neukirchen became part of the parish of Quern-Neukirchen.

Today, Neukirchen above the cliffs has been a state-approved resort since 1972
