At the beginning of the 17th century the church came into Protestant hands. The public practice of Catholic religion was prohibited. A memorial stone in the church still refers to this event. Due to the small number of Protestant churchgoers, financial problems arose and the church fell into disrepair. It was decided to maintain only the choir. This is how this ruined church was created.

The story goes that during the French advance into the Netherlands in 1672, Count De Lorge was ordered to blow up Ammersoyen Castle in Ammerzoden. Marshal Turenne wanted to prevent the French army from being attacked from the rear.

However, the count had an eye on the sister of the baron of Ammerzoden Castle and therefore devised an ingenious plan. Instead of the castle, he blew up the nearby church. However, while investigating what had actually happened to the Ruïnekerk (Ruined Church), the current deputy archivist of the Regional Archives in Zaltbommel, Sil van Doornmalen, discovered that the truth was less romantic.
