The castle was designed and built around 1300-'25. It stands in the water and has thick walls. The corner towers protrude a bit and have shooting slots. Ammersoyen Castle is located on the border with Brabant and was of strategic importance to the Duke of Gelre, who also owned it for some time.
In 1590 there is a big fire in the castle. It was restored in the 17th century, preserving the medieval floor plan.
