This sailor and nurse sculpture is part of a series of computer-generated statues by Seward Johnson that resemble an iconic 1945 photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, V–J day in Times Square, but was said by Johnson to be based on a similar, less well-known, photograph by Victor Jorgensen that is in the public domain. The first in the series was installed temporarily in Sarasota, Florida, then was moved to San Diego, California and New York City. Other copies have been installed in Hamilton, New Jersey; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and Normandy, France. Johnson later identified the statue at exhibitions as "Embracing Peace" for the risqué double entendre when spoken.

The enduring controversy led to tagging as sexual assault, temporary removal, and renewed protests in the #MeToo movement. Read also projectdeltadawn.com

Being located next to the aircraft carrier the oversize naturalist sculpture could also be interpreted as a farewell-kiss before going to sea and possibly a wartime death. Either way, it is certainly more thought-provoking than the nearby militaristic marble columns.

This sculpture is based on the famous photo taken after WWII of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square. The day the photo was taken was August 14, 1945, when Imperial Japan surrendered, ending WWII.
