As part of the realization of the Central Station, Van Asperen delivered the plans in 1895 for a raised railway bed (1100 meters long), intended to connect the station with that of Berchem. This viaduct consists of a long succession of blind arches and bridges. The arches have slightly sloping end walls and are clad in tiles in varying colors and patterns: red brick, white and yellow cut stone from Belgian quarries. The balustrades, with an astonishing view, are arranged rhythmically and crowned with turrets and bell towers.

The centers are spaces in the arches beneath the brick railway embankment along the Singel canal in Borgerhout. They are located along Engelselei, between Luitenant Naeyaertplein and Turnhoutsebaan, and form the boundary between the Singel and Borgerhout's urban core. The city plans to renovate and repurpose the 59 vacant spaces. This will meet the demand for space for production, workshops, crafts, hospitality, and other businesses. With the development of the centers, the city aims to upgrade and revitalize the entire area around Engelselei.
