Until 1942, the former childhood home of the writer, Nobel Prize winner for literature, and honorary citizen of Lübeck, Thomas Mann, stood at Breite Straße 38. A memorial stone, erected in 1975 on the artist's 100th birthday, commemorates the city's son and honors his achievements. The sculpture, made of light marble by sculptor Ulrich Beier, resembles an open book, the pages of which are revealed as one walks around the monument. Inscriptions quote from the writer's works and honor his work. Additionally, a lyre and a bow and arrow refer to Apollo, the Greek god of singers and poets.
