The station was built in a neoclassical style and was designed by the architects Léonce Reynaud and Sidney Dunnett.
The front of the station originally came from the Gare du Nord in Paris and was rebuilt in Lille with an extra floor and a large clock.
The interior of the station is richly decorated and includes a large hall with a wooden ceiling and elegant pillars.
The station opened in 1848 and was originally known as the Gare de Lille.
Between 1889 and 1892, the interior of the station was significantly modified by Sidney Dunnett, with the addition of a hall and the Hôtel des Voyageurs.
In 1993, the station was renamed Gare de Lille-Flandres after the opening of the nearby Gare de Lille-Europe.

The station was built by Léonce Reynaud and Sydney Dunnett for the CF du Nord. Construction began in 1869 and ended in 1892. The station front is the old front from Paris' Gare du Nord and was dismantled then reassembled in Lille at the end of the 19th century; an extra storey, as well as a large clock, were added to the original design. Dunnett added the Hôtel des Voyageurs in 1887, and the rooftop in 1892.
