The Midway Geyser Basin is part of the giant Yellowstone Caldera and features two significant geothermal landmark: the Excelsior Geyser (a crater that discharges 4,000 gallons of water per minute into the nearby Firehole River) and the Grand Prismatic Spring (the largest hot spring in the US). A short loop on boardwalks takes you into the basin and along these stunning locations. Come early in the day to avoid the crowds.

The Midway Geyser Basin is a geyser basin in Yellowstone National Park. It is located within the Yellowstone Caldera, north of the Upper Geyser Basin in the U.S. state of Wyoming and drains into the Firehole River. Despite its comparatively small size, it contains two significant geothermal features: the 60 × 90 meter wide Excelsior Geyser, which pours over 15,000 liters per minute into the nearby Firehole River. The largest hot spring in Yellowstone National Park and the third largest in the world, the 110 m wide and 37 m deep Grand Prismatic Spring, is also located here. Other thermal springs include the Opal Pool or the Turquoise Pool.

From the parking lot, 11 miles south of Madison Junction, there is a short loop trail through the Middle Geyser Basin, passing all of the major geothermal features.

Maybe don't plan your visit around lunchtime, as there is a huge rush at that time. Parking spaces are in short supply and longer waiting times are inevitable.
