This extremely photogenic bridge crosses the Soča near Kobarid over a narrow rocky channel. The transition at this point has always been important. Only a few places along the raging river offered the opportunity to build a bridge.
In 1758/1759 the old wooden structure was replaced by a stone arch bridge. At that time there were Napoleonic troops in the region, which is how the building got its famous name.
However, none of the French were involved in the construction. The bridge was blown up during the Isonzo battles in World War I and was only rebuilt after the war.

In 1616 the Venetians destroyed the wooden bridge. The old Napoleon bridge, with one arch, was built in stone in 1750. Later Napoleon's troops marched there towards Predil, hence the name.

If you come from the east and cycle north of the Soca on the less traveled road, this is the best option (and for a few kilometers the only one) to change the side of the river. Otherwise very picturesque and photogenic. This is where the road to Drezniske begins, which you can follow to an open-air museum further up on the mountain (komoot.de/highlight/3585236). Are about 1000 meters in altitude ;-).
