The Kobarid area was the scene of several battles during the First World War as part of the Isonzo Front between Austria-Hungary and the Kingdom of Italy, which fought on the side of the Entente. After a long, costly trench warfare, the Central Powers achieved a breakthrough in the Battle of Karfreit in October 1917, although this was not, of course, decisive for the war.

Cycling

A road leads to the Italian ossuary and St. Anthony's Church above Kobarid, where the Stations of the Cross are located. The military monument and memorial is shaped like an octagon with three concentric circles that narrow toward the apex of St. Anthony's Church; it can be circumnavigated on several levels. A private museum collection is located next to the ossuary.
