The first play, Vondel's Joseph in Dothan, was performed on the Heide am Wetering in Hertme. Under the patronage of the Eerste Twentse Openluchtspelen (ESTO) Foundation, a permanent decoration was created from Bentheimer sandstone from 1954 onwards with many volunteers on the site next to St. Stephen's Church.
