The Vapeurbrug was built as part of the railway connection between Lokeren and Zelzate. This lift bridge was mainly used intensively by industrial train traffic to the former sugar factory, which was located on the other side of the Moervaart. The vapor bridge is now recognized as a heritage site and is a reminder of Moerbeke's sugar factory and industrial past. The name refers to the steam trains that ran on the railway line 77A for almost 100 years. Next to the bridge were the water boilers to supply the steam trains
The water tower next to the bridge was built in 1879 as part of the domain of the Lippens castle. (info website Routen)
