The nature reserve is located northwest of Springe im Deister. It protects a deciduous forest area on a historically old forest site, which is dominated by beech forests. Depending on the location, the beech forests are characterized as grove or woodruff beech forests. In the south of the nature reserve, in the Fahrenbrink area, there are sloping ravine forests, some of which grow on steep slopes. Here the common beech is often joined by sycamore maple, sycamore elm and ash. There are only small areas of oak forests and alder and ash forests along stream meadows and spring areas. Occasionally there are coniferous forests mixed with deciduous trees. Some of the deciduous forests in the nature reserve have a high proportion of old and dead wood.

Numerous springs and streams can be found, particularly in the northern area of the nature reserve. Some of the springs are formed as tuff lime springs. There are also some ponds and ponds in the nature reserve.

The nature reserve is the habitat of various bats, including the greater mouse-eared bat, Bechstein's bat, pond bat, fringed bat, greater bearded bat and lesser bearded bat. The Deister is the habitat of the wildcat. The forests are home to the fire salamander and the butterfly species lesser kingfisher, elm hairstreak and greater butterfly. The forests are habitat, among other things. for black and green woodpeckers. The quarries are breeding grounds for eagle owls. The streams are home to, among other things: the bullhead.
