Although the freighters have now left the area, the canal is now navigable and a popular walking destination.
Walkers can use the canal towpaths and enjoy a wide range of restaurants along the water.
The towpath is part of the Eurobike route No. 5 connecting London to Brindisi.
Pleasure boats can use it between April and the end of September every year, and the lock service is free.
