    The market town of Winterhausen used to be an office of the Limpurgian rulership of Speckfeld (or their heiresses from Rechtern), where the Reformation was introduced from 1540 onwards. The place was from 1500 in the Franconian imperial circle. It fell to Bavaria during mediatization and was ceded to the Grand Duchy of Würzburg in 1810 during border adjustments, with which it reverted to Bavaria in 1814. In the course of administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality came into being with the municipal edict of 1818.
