The elongated Plaza del Proto takes its name from the statue of a foal (potro) that adorns the 16th-century fountain at one end. In the past, when the city's horse and mule market was held here, the square was much livelier. The square is also home to the Posada del Pontro, the inn from Cervantes' Don Quixote, which now houses the Centro Flamenco Fosforito.
