Léon Rinquet, known by the nickname "the Negus," held a doctorate in physics and mathematics. After working for several years as a teacher at an atheneum, he moved to Xhoffraix in 1935. After his mother's death, he sought the seclusion of the moor, which he already knew from earlier excursions with friends.
Together with two friends, he built a spacious and solid wooden hut with a thatched roof there. He channeled water from the nearby Ru stream to his accommodation.
