The nature reserve is part of a renaturalized post-mining landscape north of the Mulde reservoir. It includes the remaining open-cast mining waters of the "Red Lake" in the northeast, the southern shore of the "Blue Lake" in the north and the "Schlauch", a 10 - 12 m deep cut in the terrain between two slopes of glacial till, in the west.

The artificially created, arched "Blue Lake" has a mesotrophic character. The lake bed is only slightly silted.

The nature reserve has been subject to natural development since 1963.
