Originally the church, also known as Santi Nicandro e Marciano Martiri, stood near the coastline.
It must have been much taller than it appears today. Like many other buildings in the city, this one too is subject to subsidence, or that geological phenomenon which causes a gradual and progressive lowering of the land.
