Built between 1554 and 1557 to a design by Bernardino Tavella as the new headquarters of the Church of Santa Maria in Porto Fuori, the BASILICA OF SANTA MARIA IN PORTO is located in the initial stretch of Via Roma a few steps from the city's Art Museum.

The building, preceded by a staircase completed in 1783, overlooks a large rectangular space decorated with flowerbeds and offers one of the most evocative views of the city if observed from the facing via Cerchio.

Built in part thanks to materials coming from the demolition of the church of San Lorenzo in Cesarea, the basilica was completed around 1780 by Camillo Morigia (1743-1795), superimposing a neoclassical style on the facade of the baroque style of the previous period.

Unlike most of the buildings in Ravenna, its façade was made of white marble stone, effectively confirming the richness of the religious order to which the church was connected via the adjacent monastery, today the seat of the MAR.

Matched columns, niches, tympanums on the portals, a large balcony window, statues of saints, a depiction of the Greek Madonna on the central entrance door (1689) are just some of the elements that make up the façade, confirming its dynamism and artistic beauty.
