The market square in Oświęcim was established during the medieval location of the city as a central trading point, initially surrounded by wooden buildings. At the market square, there was the seat of the city authorities and the most significant burgher houses. Currently, the market square is surrounded by brick houses, mostly from the 19th century, and there are restaurants on the slab.
In 2009, "Tęcza" - a commercial pavilion from the 1960s, built on a bunker from the Second World War, was demolished. The demolition of the "Rainbow" standing in the middle of the Market Square was a turning point, after which the revitalization of the Main Market Square began.
