Bell Tower at Skamlingsbanken
In the valley below Højskamling, you’ll find a simple but powerful monument: the open bell tower, built in 1948 to honour South Jutland’s resistance fighters from World War II. The tower features bronze plates engraved with the names of 83 fallen heroes from the region.
Three times a day during summer, the bell plays Prins Jørgen's March—a melody that was used by the BBC as a signal to Denmark during the war. The idea to build the tower came during a large celebration of Denmark’s liberation in June 1945, attended by around 100,000 people.
The bell tower stands as a reminder of both Denmark’s fight for freedom and the long history of cultural resistance in the region, making it a meaningful stop on your hike.
