The Alte Kinsach pumping station was built in 1947 to ensure the internal drainage of the dike hinterland in the event of a flood. The outflows of the two connected receiving waters, Alte Kinsach and Dunkgraben, are forwarded to the Danube as a free-flowing passage through low water and medium water levels via a river bed to the east of the pumping station building.

A pumping station is a lifting device for water. It is one of the oldest man-made technical systems.
