The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary on the 432 meter high Bogenberg near the Lower Bavarian city of Bogen is an important Catholic pilgrimage site in the diocese of Regensburg. It is considered the oldest pilgrimage church in Bavaria. For this reason, the Bogenberg ascending 118 meters above the Danube is also known as the sacred mountain of Lower Bavaria.

The holy mountain of Lower Bavaria invites you to visit again and again due to its location, the pilgrimage church and also its varied landscape. We can also mention the local history museum that shows us some interesting things that are worth knowing. Last but not least, the Gasthaus zur Schönen Aussicht is worth a visit.

The Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary on the Bogenberg mountain originated from a local church and private church belonging to the Counts of Bogen. In the High and Late Middle Ages, a pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary developed alongside the parish of Bogenberg. A pious legend dates back to 1104, making the Bogenberg one of the oldest Marian pilgrimage sites in Bavaria still in operation today. The parish, pilgrimage site, and a priory were cared for by the Benedictines of the Oberaltaich Monastery until 1803. The miraculous image of the Virgin Mary in hope, a stone figure from the late 13th/14th century, is an unusual depiction of the Virgin Mary. The current church building was completed in 1463, and its interior has been altered several times. The annual candlelit pilgrimage to the Bogenberg mountain takes place here on Pentecost Sunday. The church is open during the day.

The Bogenberg is considered THE sacred mountain of Lower Bavaria. According to tradition, Count Aswin von Bogen in 1104 fished a portrait of the Virgin Mary from the Danube. No one could explain where the image came from. The count initially exhibited it in his castle chapel, but the miraculous appearance of the portrait spread quickly. With the growing number of pilgrims, a dedicated pilgrimage church had to be built for the portrait of Mary. The first church was soon too small and 1493, the still existing pilgrimage church was inaugurated. This makes it the oldest Marian pilgrimage church in Bavaria.

If you are not so interested in Christian sanctuaries, you can simply enjoy the fantastic view of the Danube.

Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary

Around 1100, Countess Luitgard and Count Albert I donated the ecclesia bogana, the church on the Bogenberg, to the Oberaltaich Monastery. According to legend, a stone image of the Virgin Mary was carried from the Danube to the Bogenberg in 1104, and numerous miracles are attributed to the Madonna of the Bogenberg. In the 15th and 16th centuries, pilgrimages experienced a strong upswing, and the present late Gothic church was built from 1463 under Prior Benedict Behaim and completed in 1513.

In 1592, lightning struck the church tower, melting all the bells. Just a few years later, in 1633/34, the Bogenberg suffered severe devastation as a result of the Thirty Years' War. The miraculous image was also broken. Apparently, however, it was quickly restored and decorated with a painted garment of ears of corn around the middle of the 17th century. In 1652, lightning and fire again destroyed the church tower and its bells. However, five new bells were acquired the following year, in 1653. These still form the pilgrimage church's bell ringing today. From 1722 to 1730, the church was redesigned in the early Rococo style.

It is a three-aisled hall church, 48 meters long, 25 meters wide, and 16 meters high, with a raised central nave. The recessed choir continues the width of the central nave. The church contains two miraculous images. On the altar of grace, created by Roland Friedrichsen in 1960, stands a clothed stone figure from the early 15th century, a rare depiction of the pregnant Mary. It stood on the high altar until 1954. To the right of the high altar stands a stone statue of the Madonna from the 13th century, which probably originally served as a miraculous image and was placed outside on the south side of the church until 1958. The high altar was created in 1954/60 and is also a work by Friedrichsen. The bronze cast depicts Christ on the Cross and the thrust of Longinus. The pulpit dates from 1725. On the west wall below the organ loft is a group of the Coronation of Mary from around 1500. On the altar in the right aisle is a Vespers picture from around 1430. The choir is crowned on each side by three richly decorated oratorios. To the right and left of the altar of grace, the two large Pentecost candles, the last offerings of the pilgrims from Holzkirchen, are conspicuous.
