The rider's house is one of the oldest and most picturesque half-timbered houses in the Upper Lusatia landscape. The house owes its name to the wooden equestrian figure on the side wing.

The equestrian figure is a victory trophy of the "knight's jousting", an old Upper Lusatia folk custom. The then 20-year-old Christiane Louise Schniebs acquired it at the jousting in Lauba for the fair in 1874. The equestrian figure was attached to the parental home.

Knight jousting and eagle shooting were popular amusements for young people in south-eastern Upper Lusatia in past centuries. Today you can still see such rider or eagle discs on a few house gables.
