The pit - watercourse through Wismar's old town
It is one of the oldest urban watercourses in Germany and was artificially created in the middle of the 13th century based on a natural stream. It connects Lake Schwerin with the Baltic Sea via the Mühlenteich, Wallensteingraben and Lake Losten. Built in the middle of the 13th century using boulders, the pit was used for a long time to supply the townspeople with drinking and industrial water. Its water drove mill wheels and was a fire-fighting water reservoir.
Worth seeing buildings along the watercourse are the Nikolaikirche, the Schabbellhaus and the vault as a bridging of the pit and ends at the old port.

The entire course of the creek through the city of Wismar offers sights, small footbridges on the bank, beautiful bridges that make it possible to cross the creek and numerous buildings with history.

The pit or Mühlenbach in Wismar has survived to this day as an artificial watercourse from the Middle Ages. Today it is the oldest surviving watercourse in northern Germany. It was built in the 13th century and helped with the water supply and operated numerous mills and was important as a reservoir for extinguishing fires. The fresh pit flows into the Baltic Sea at the old port.
It invites you to stroll and makes up an important flair in Wismar.
