The old water tower is located near the station directly on the railway line and had a very important function in the days of steam locomotives because they had to be filled with water to generate steam and thus maintain their function.

Great that it has been preserved to this day and can therefore report back then as a contemporary witness.

The water tower at Skjern Station is one of eleven protected water towers in Denmark. It was built in 1898 where it replaced a water tower built in connection with the construction of Skjern Railway Station in 1874 by architect NPC Holsøe, who was involved in the construction of a large part of the station buildings in the second half of Skjern.

The tower is now managed by Ringkøbing-Skjern Museum.

The tower is built of red brick, with the cistern at the top camouflaged by greenish woodwork and adorned with a locomotive wind vane. It is round and has three floors. There is an external water level gauge on top of the tower, which is also the case on the 1899 Nyborg Water Tower.

The tower is considered the "baptismal certificate" for the city, since the construction of the station set the city's growth in motion and shaped its shape. In 1984, for example, the water tower was a motif on the annual Skjern Christmas stamp.

In 1980 Skjern Municipality decided to sell the water tower, but Skjern-Egvad Museum resisted by putting forward a preservation case in which they were successful.

On New Year's Day 2008, a pump room under the water tower was destroyed, but the tower itself was not damaged.
