The Ringkøbing-Varde railway was opened in 1875 and the Herning-Skjern line in 1881. This formed the basis for today's Skjern station. From 1920 to 1981 it was also the starting point for the Skjern-Videbæk Line, which was to be extended to Skive but never became one.

Skjern station has three platform tracks. A tunnel was built between the platforms as there is a lot of traffic between them as passengers have to change between trains and citizens of Skjern itself. Now there are platform crossings with warning in the form of flashes and sounds. In the station building there is a waiting room, ticket office and post office. Skjern bus station is a little further south. There is also a former warehouse and a water tower.

Skjern train station is located in the center of Skjern towards Bredgade opposite Banktorvet and the pedestrian street Jernbanegade.
