At the beginning of the 18th century, Membach became an independent parish from Baelen, so the community was given permission to build its own church. This was consecrated in 1722. During the 18th century, the church underwent several architectural renovations. The tower, however, was added according to the plans of the Liège architect Émile Demany and was not completed until 1884.

Construction of the church began in 1720 and was consecrated in 1722 in honor of Jean Baptiste. The fact that this church was built is thanks to the people and patrons of Membach. The local lord Johann Lindenlauff, for example, advocated for the building with the authorities and with Abbot Rolduc. He also procured monstrances, ciboria and other religious objects.
