Two glass-enclosed elevators take you up to the 77m high lookout tower and that too without a fee. Up here, where there is also a restaurant, you have a dream view over the Gileppe dam. Location information for orientation is attached to the outer pane in a panoramic view. Well done! An absolute highlight!

The Gileppe dam lies in the East Belgian Ardennes.

When it was completed, it was the first concrete dam in Europe. The dam was inaugurated by King Leopold II on July 28, 1878. At that time, the water absorption capacity of the reservoir was approx. 13 million square meters, the area was 86 hectares.

An increase of more than 16 meters was carried out from 1967 to 1971 and the capacity was increased to approx. 26.5 million square meters with an area of 130 hectares.

The lookout tower with a restaurant on the upper floor from which you have a fantastic view and the lion on the dam are striking.

The 13.5-meter-high sandstone lion, which consists of 180 blocks and weighs around 300 t, stands on the top of the dam and faces north-east to the then district town of Eupen.

The dam's panoramic tower rises to a height of 77 metres. This glass-covered belvedere offers you a breathtaking view of the masterpiece that is the Gileppe, but also of the immense Hertogenwald forest located not far from the Hautes Fagnes nature reserve.

This place houses the history of the dam through a permanent exhibition that includes many photos and many writings. Don't hesitate to go to the panoramic terrace restaurant, where you can get a breath of fresh air, but also a good meal or simply a refreshment. The tower also offers a wide range of activities for young and old: cuistax rental, mountain bikes... and why not a visit to the bowels of the dam.
