During the night of June 6, 1944, a soldier from the 101st Airborne Division got stuck with his parachute on the church tower. The soldier initially pretended to be dead and was then taken prisoner by the Germans. In the immediate vicinity is the worth seeing 101st Airborne Museum.

Sainte-Mère-Église is at the northern end of the D-Day landing zones. Actually, the paratroopers weren't supposed to land directly over the place because it was known that German soldiers were stationed there. However, the soldiers were either dropped off incorrectly or blown away by the wind. And so the crazy story of John Steele came about.
