This memorial is part of a group of monuments which pay tribute to the heroes of the landing. It was erected by the Normandy landing committee and represents General Leclerc in tank uniform.

Manche commemorative monument located at Saint-Martin-de-Varreville beach. It is part of a series of ten monuments of identical appearance created by Yves-Marie Froidevaux and erected by the Normandy landing committee on the historic sites of the landing. That of Saint-Martin-de-Varreville is made up of a massive column and a commemorative plaque placed at the foot. On the top of the column are engraved the words “On June 6, 1944, the allied armies landed at dawn”, or “Here General Leclerc, commanding the 2nd Armored Division, approached”. The latter is surmounted by a bust of the General.
These are therefore two events which are commemorated at the same time: the landing of June 6 on Utah Beach and that of General Leclerc on August 1, 1944. There are equivalent monuments in Carentan and Sainte-Mère-Église.
