After crossing the Channel, the plane is in the Cotentin sky, but before the men have time to jump, the plane is hit by the flak. The aircraft crashes in a field near the village of Beuzeville-au-Plain, killing all of its occupants. After extinguishing the fire, the inhabitants of the village bury the remains of the American soldiers in a cemetery in Sainte-Mère-Église. On March 27, 1951, the body of Thomas Meehan was exhumed and transferred to the United States where he was reburied at the Jefferson Barracks Military Post National Cemetery in Lemay, Missouri.

Monument 439th TC group and 506th PIR Monument in memory of the crew of an aircraft from the 439th Troop Carrier Group and 17 paratroopers from the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st US Airborne Division. The Douglas C47 was hit by flak and crashed on the territory of the commune on the night of June 6, 1944; a panel recounts the event with a map of the crash site. A small stele reminds us that these soldiers inspired producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks for the screenplay of the film Bands of Brothers.
