Saint John of Nepomuk lived around 1340–1393 and was a priest and canon in the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). He was martyred and thrown into the Vltava River because he refused to reveal the royal family's confession secret. Later, he was canonized and is known, among other things, as the patron saint of bridges and water, and the protector of the seal of confession.
The most famous and important sanctuary dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk is the pilgrimage church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Zelená Hora (near Žďár nad Sázavou, Czech Republic).
