The Sint-Martinuskerk is located on the artificially raised and once moated courtyard of the tower castle (opposite the church). It is possible that a church was located on this site long before the tower castle was built. The current church building houses various construction phases. In the south-east corner of the church tower, remains of a Romanesque church from the 12th century have been preserved. The tower in marlstone belongs to an early Gothic church from the 16th century. In front of the portal are two limestone Maas capitals, probably originating from this church. The current church was built next to the existing tower in 1898-1899 in neo-Gothic style to a design by Jozef Tonnaer. The interior includes a 16th century polychrome wooden statue of Saint Martin, a 16th century Saint Anne-ten-Drieën, a late Gothic Maasland triumphal cross and a bluestone Maasland baptismal font with four busts (14th-15th century). The beautiful neo-Gothic interior ensures that this church rightfully bears the title of 'Pearl of the Maasland'. The church was protected by ministerial decree of 30 April 2004.

The St. Martin's Church of Kessenich has a church tower that dates back to the fourteenth century and is located right across the hill from the old castle. The church tower was built in marlstone and is an example of early Maas Gothic. The church and the surrounding center are currently being taken care of. Originally a Romanesque church stood here, on the domain of the castle of Kessenich, in the twelfth century.
